The Worker Justice Center has recently welcomed a new staff member, Martiza Ovsak, who is our very first Domestic & Sexual Violence Victim Advocate for the Hudson Valley region. WJCNY’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Program offers specialized, culturally appropriate case management and legal services to victims of domestic violence who are employed in agricultural work or have previously been employed in agricultural work, regardless of immigration status. Martiza is bilingual (Spanish/English) and will work with victims to identify and address the specific needs of each survivor. Our program's in-house legal services include U-Visa applications and VAWA self-petitions, while WJCNY works with local partners to provide referrals for family legal services. In the Hudson Valley, the program is funded to serve women in the following counties: Dutchess, Columbia, Greene, Ulster, Orange, and Sullivan. A free sleep-away camp for children of breast cancer survivors or children who have lost their mothers to breast cancer - the only service we know of exclusively for children in this situation. Children typically don’t talk about their fear. Parents tell us that often they act out because they are afraid of losing the parent they love and depend on. Camp provides a support group for them. They have fun, hike, swim, do art projects, learn about healthy cooking and participate in sharing circles where many, for the first time, verbalize their fears. Friendships are developed that last throughout the years.
